To start a recycling program in your home, the first thing you want to do is call the recycling center nearest you to find out what types of materials they take. You will want to remember to ask them if they provide curbside pick-up service along with recycling containers or bins.

Next you will want to purchase or make a recycling bin for each different type it items you will recycle. For example, if you get the daily newspaper, and your center recycles newspapers, you will want a home recycling bin just for newspapers, and a different recycling bin for standard size printer paper, etc.

Then you will place all the different home recycling bins for each type of material in a central location you can call the "family recycling center". Just as a suggestion you can place a smaller recycle bin in your kitchen for all recyclable containers, which will include plastic, aluminum cans, and the plastic lined drink boxes. The plastic line drink boxes are recyclable, but not all recycling center will accept them.

Assign someone in the family to rinse out all the containers in the recycling bin in the kitchen, sort the items and then deposit them in the designated recycling bin in the "family recycling center". Rinsing all these items will cut down on bugs, smell and make for a clean recycling center at home and the center, which will take it off your hands.

If you have curbside pick-up, assign someone in the family with the chore of carrying the items to the curb for pick-up on the designated day. If you are taking your recyclable to the recycling center yourself, it is best to assign a day. You may want it to be every Friday, or every other Friday depending on the needs of your family.

As for the home recycling bins you can choose bins in a variety of sizes and colors. Depending on the size of your family and the number of plastic bottles, aluminum cans, etch they can produce in a week will help you decide the size of the bin you will need.

The bins will come in a variety of sizes, but you may be limited in the color. If you look at commercial recycle bins you will be able to find them in larger sizes and a variety of colors. The colors will you will have to choose from will depend on the company you choose to find one. Some companies will only offer recycling bins in the color blue however there is a different company from which you will have a wide variety of colors to choose from. You will be able to find stacking containers, some with lids and some without lids. Some of the recycling bins you will find will be made from plastic and some will be made from steel. If you look hard enough you will be able to find any type of container you want in your home and in several different price ranges. Some of the recycling bins can run as high as $1000, but they will hold more than one type of recyclable material, while others will cost much less and many will run in between. You will be able to find home recycling bins at Target, and many of the hardware stores, including Ace Hardware, as well as online.
